Introduction to Beekeeping

Introduction to Beekeeping
Curious about bees — and how honey is made?
11am - 12pm
Join us at Rochester Square for seasonal workshops and friendly, hands-on sessions exploring the hidden world inside a working beehive.
You’ll learn how honeybees live, work, and communicate — and, weather permitting, you’ll have the chance to suit up and take a guided look inside the Rochester Square hive.
What you’ll learn:
How honeybees are kept and cared for
The parts of a hive (and what each one is for)
The roles of the queen, workers and drones
What happens through the beekeeping year
How honey is made (and why it tastes different at different times of year)
Practical hive inspection
With guidance from our beekeeper Max, you’ll:
Put on a bee suit and learn how to approach a hive
Watch how we open the hive and use smoke responsibly
Look inside the hive to see what the colony is doing right now
Spot key signs of colony health
Learn what beekeepers look for during routine checks
(Please note: hive inspections are weather dependent — bees don’t like cold, damp conditions)
Perfect for anyone curious about beekeeping, what happens inside a hive and the role of bees in our ecosystem.
This workshop is suitable for children aged 11 and over, to be accompanied by a parent of guardian.
Please bring sturdy, closed footwear — wellingtons are ideal.
We also recommend long trousers and socks, and tying back long hair.
A quick note on safety -
Bees are usually calm, but they can sting. We’ll explain how to behave around the hive and will supervise closely throughout. If you have a known allergy to bee stings, please speak to us before booking/attending.
Sessions are run by beekeeper Max, who has been involved with bees since the age of 10 years old. Max is passionate about sharing the joys and fascinating aspects of beekeeping, how bees live and work together and their role in the London ecosystem.
